HERITAGE

Religious heritage

  • The Saint-Jean-Baptiste churchThe former parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste has been listed as a historical monument since 1998. It is located in a place called La Peyrouse, a part of the village with the abbey, at the entrance to the exceptional site of the Baume-les-Messieurs reculée, one of the most characteristic in the Jura. According to archaeologists, the site of the church and the cemetery was occupied by a Gallo-Roman construction and it is likely that the site of the church has been in use since the end of antiquity. The three lower levels of the bell tower-porch can be attributed to a 16th century building campaign. The church was rebuilt in the first half of the 18th century, the nave shortly before 1739, and then the rest with some structural differences. Two side chapels were then added symmetrically to the choir bay, forming a false transept. The porch bell tower was raised by one floor in 1770. The vault of the south side chapel was rebuilt in 1895. It is preceded by a porch belfry; the gable roof covers the side chapels. The lava stones preserved on the roof are in keeping with the cliffs of the site. Note the moulded porch door and the side door with Ionic pilasters. Inside, there is a single nave covered with groin vaults received by Tuscan pilasters. The choir retains an altarpiece and panelling with painted canvases, and the nave retains numerous tombstones.

  • St Peter's AbbeySaint-Pierre Abbey: this is an ancient Benedictine abbey located in the commune of Baume-les-Messieurs, whose first mentions date back to the 9th century, when an ancient monastery was restored under the direction of Abbot Bernon, who came from Gigny and then left Baume in 909-910 to found the great Burgundian abbey of Cluny. Initially the "Mother of Cluny", Baume became, not without conflict, its daughter in the 12th century. The Abbey has been partially classified as a historical monument since 1862 and has been listed since 1929 and 1933.
