What are the most beautiful mountains in France?

The Dent du Chat

The Dent du Chat is a peak culminating at 1,390 m of altitude, it is part of the famous Mont du Chat (Jura). This canine-shaped summit (of a cat or another animal!) extends to the western shore of the Lac du Bourget near Aix-les-Bains in Savoie. The Dent du Chat hike is more strenuous than it looks but offers a sumptuous panorama of the region.

Puy de Sancy

The Puy de Sancy massif is a legendary mountain. Culminating at 1,886 m, it is the highest summit of the Monts Dore, located in the heart of the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Park. Half of the climb is by cable car before tackling the 864 steps up to the summit. But it's worth the effort, as the view from the top of this thousand-year-old volcano is breathtaking.

Mont Ventoux

The Mont Ventoux is not only one of the most emblematic, and difficult, stages of the Tour de France! Located in the Vaucluse, its summit reaches 1,910 m and the Mont Ventoux has been classified as a "Biosphere Reserve" by UNESCO since 1990 because of the exceptional fauna and flora it shelters. Nicknamed the Master of Provence, it dominates the region and can be admired from over 100 km away.

Mont Blanc

France's highest peak is impossible to ignore in the ranking of the most beautiful mountains in France. Overlooking the Chamonix valley from the top of its 4,808 m, Mont Blanc is a mountain of legend. A paradise for mountaineers eager for thrills, Mont Blanc offers an absolutely unique preserved natural area. And there is always a twinge of sadness when you see its great silhouette in the distance...

The Pic du Midi

The Pic du Midi, at 2,877 m, is one of the most famous peaks in the Pyrenees. Not only does the site offer an exceptional setting, it is also a landmark for astronomy enthusiasts who flock to observe the sky from its observatory. Accessible to all thanks to its cable car and its terraces, the Pic du Midi reveals a new face at each change of season.

The Mont-Aiguille

At 2,086 m, Mont-Aiguille is considered one of the 7 wonders of the Dauphiné. Its first ascent dates back to the 15th century, when it was considered "inaccessible". Even today, to tackle it requires a good level and an excellent preparation. The summit offers a perfect view of Grenoble and the Chartreuse but also of the Grand Veymont, the highest point of the Vercors massif.

The Pic de la Meije

The Pic de la Meije takes its name from the word Meidjo which means midday in Provencal. Nicknamed the Aiguille du Midi, the Pic de la Meije is a summit of the Ecrins massif located on the border of the Hautes-Alpes and Isère departments. The Meije was the last major summit in the Alps to be climbed in 1877 and remains a complex challenge even for experienced climbers. Those who prefer to stay below, however, will enjoy admiring its summit, often lost in the clouds.

The Barre des Écrins

The Barre des Écrins is nothing less than the second highest peak in France after Mont Blanc. It was even the first, until the annexation of Savoie in 1860! With its 4,101 m, it has nothing to envy to its mythical neighbour. The majestic summit of the Barre des Écrins can be seen from almost all of the Western Alps.

The Sainte-Victoire Mountain

A favourite subject of the painter Paul Cézanne, the Montagne Sainte-Victoire is the emblem of Provence. The massif is more than 18 km long and 5 km wide and the characteristic silhouette of the Sainte-Victoire Mountain has made it a mythical site. Every year, thousands of visitors flock to the area to hike, climb, hang-glide or simply have a picnic in an enchanting setting.

The Pic du Canigou

Located in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, the Pic du Canigou rises to an altitude of 2,784 m. It is without doubt one of the most beautiful mountains in France. It is even known as the lighthouse of the Mediterranean! Without going so far as to tackle the ascent of the peak itself, reserved for experienced mountaineers, the site offers multiple hiking trails accessible to all.
