All Saints' Day holidays: where to go in France?

The dates for the All Saints' holiday begin for school children at the end of October and end on 8 November. Whether you want to take a week off or just a weekend in France, this is generally a great time for family trips and is popular with travelling parents. Among the most popular destinations for autumn holidays, the South of France will be ideal for enjoying a little more sunshine.

Where to go in the sun in December?

Roussillon, ranked among the most beautiful villages in France

To see all the colours, head to Provence in the south of France, between the Luberon and the Monts de Vaucluse. The village of Roussillon, classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, is located in the heart of the largest ochre deposit in the world. The rock can be found everywhere, in the narrow streets, on the walls of houses and other buildings.

The Cathar country, in the Aude

History buffs, this region will satisfy your insatiable appetite for the legends of the past! In addition to castles, medieval abbeys and museums to visit in the rainy season, the Cathar country offers beautiful walks for a day or more, such as the one on the Cathar Trail between Durban and Duilhac.

Paris and its monuments

The capital, partly devoid of its incessant flow of foreign tourists, reveals itself in a new light. Despite the health pass, it is quite possible to visit the museums and tourist sites of Paris, giving the French the opportunity to (re)discover the emblematic Parisian monuments and to stroll on the terraces of the restaurants and its countless cafés.

The Gers for a family holiday in October

Tired of cities, why not spend some happy days in the countryside of the Gers during the autumn holidays? Whether it's a river trip on the Baïse, or a breath of fresh air in the many forests of the department, the foie gras region offers a serene holiday for the whole family.

The Deux-Caps, in the Côte d'Opale

This protected natural site is the ideal place to recharge your batteries in northern France. Between Boulogne-sur-Mer and Calais, Cap Blanc-Nez and Cap Gris-Nez make this part of the coast famous, with a whole host of experiences to be had in the Bay of Wissant during the All Saints' Day school holidays.

Haute-Corse out of season

Do you want to go to the sun in October for the autumn holidays? The climate in the region during the All Saints' holiday is still favourable in Haute-Corse, which is the ideal time to discover Bastia and its surroundings, from the magnificent Cap Corse to the marine and land reserve of Scandola, via the citadel of Corte or the seaside resorts of Calvi and Ile Rousse.

The Camargue

While lovers of horseback riding will find their happiness in the manades (bull and horse farms), nature lovers will admire the pink flamingos at the bend of the ponds. Don't miss the salt extraction in the salt marshes of Aigues-Mortes, a medieval city which is also worth a visit.

The Basque Coast

Between the Landes and the Spanish border, discover the large sandy beaches and flysch cliffs, a unique Basque curiosity. From Bayonne to Hendaye, there are many places to visit, from the smallest village on the coast, Guéthary, to the bustling Biarritz. Walking enthusiasts should not hesitate to take the 26-kilometre long coastal path, which takes walkers from Bidart to Hendaye.

The Pink Granite Coast, in the Côtes-d'Armor

There are only three pink granite coasts in the world, which makes this little corner of Brittany a very popular geological exception. Enjoy a long walk along the seafront on the "sentier des Douaniers", part of which is on the GR34 hiking trail, from Perros-Guirec to Ploumanac'h. Ploumanac'h, elected favourite village of the French in 2015, is worth a visit in its own right, with its lighthouse perched on granite rocks, which offers an unmissable viewpoint.

The Pink Granite Coast is also a must for a road trip on the west coast in France.

Lille and its surroundings

This is the ideal destination for a family trip in October. In addition to welsh, fricadelle and Maroilles, you can head north to explore the diversity of its cultural heritage. Whether it's the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lille, La Piscine in Roubaix or the LaM in Villeneuve-d'Ascq, you can discover the different aspects of Lille Métropole 2020, capital of design.

Marseille in the south of France

There are several good reasons to go to the city of Marseille this autumn to take advantage of the Indian summer: its inescapable creeks to fill up on iodine, its culinary specialities, its mistral wind that tickles our senses on the Old Port... not forgetting the Frioul islands, accessible by boat, and the indisputable Bonne-Mère.

Carnac in Brittany

If you are a fan of Breton culture, Carnac is the place to be during your holidays, to admire its alignments of menhirs, to attend the traditional performances of the Bagad, or to look for the best point of view on the Quiberon peninsula from the Grande Plage.

The Queyras

The Hautes-Alpes is home to the highest village in France, the admirable St Véran, which is situated at an altitude of over 2,000 metres. You can stay here to admire the old houses, the narrow streets full of flowers, and to visit the astronomical observatory. Autumn is the best time of the year to discover the mountains, whose colours blaze during what is known there as the "feu des Mélèzes".
